Exhibition about the Welland Viaduct in Harringworth Church throughout June
Sat, 04 Jun 2016 10:00am

Harringworth Church to host an exhibition about the History of the Welland Viaduct this June

There will be an exhibition of the History of Harringworth Viaduct on display in the St John the Baptist Church from Saturday 4th June until Sunday 26th June.

This is a rare opportunity to visit the exhibition put together by Harringworth's resident historian from the village archive, and was last seen nearly 10 years ago.

The exhibition traces the initial surveying of the valley with copies of the original maps together with details of the Midland railway board, the Navvies with an idea of the impact and conditions these individuals made on the area with photographs. It is hard to believe that work started, laying the first brick in March 1876, first arch completed June 1877 and the whole viaduct finished in July 1878, just over 2 years, almost impossible to contemplate this timescale in today's world.

When the viaduct opened on October 1st 1880, eight trains per day were scheduled, four in each direction. By 1903 the line was carrying over a dozen express and stopping trains each way daily.

There will also be photographs of the stations of Harringworth, Gretton, Seaton, and Uppingham available, together with more up to date images of the ongoing maintenance work carried out over the years by Network Rail.

The exhibition also features brief details about the work of Reverend D.W. Barrett, the vicar of Nassington who published 'Life and Work among the Navvies'. Reverend Barrett was to supply a record of a special undertaking in railway work, record the manners and customs of the navies and describe the work of the Church amongst them.

You can read more about the Viaduct and Railway by visiting the Harringworth village website at www.harringworthvillage.org under the heading 'Harringworth & Shotley History'.

The Exhibition which is free to visitors will open on the same morning the Flying Scotsman is due to 'steam' over the Harringworth Viaduct around 10.00am on Saturday 4 June. Parking will be available in a field off Seaton Road on the outskirts of the village (NN17 3AF) with refreshments including coffee and bacon baps available from 9.00 am and everyone will be welcome to visit the Church and see the exhibition whilst in the area. The exhibition will remain open until 26 June and visitors are welcome from 9.30 – 17.00 every day.
